Symptoms of Transient Ischemic Attacks

A transient ischemic attack can come without any warning and may last up to 24 hours. The immediate symptoms can be mild or dramatic, and eventually lead to miscellaneous health conditions.

Common symptoms of a transient ischemic attack are:

  • Muscular weakness
  • Face droop on one side
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Temporary vision loss
  • Confusion
  • Numbness
  • Loss of coordination

However, no matter the exact extent or manifestation of the symptoms, it should be cause for alarm. Many transient ischemic attacks are followed closely by strokes, and so it is highly advised anyone who suffers such an attack be taken to urgent care immediately. The mere proclivity to suffering a transient ischemic attack can make it dangerous for people to be away from home for extended stretches of time, which in turn makes gainful or regular employment problematic.

Are Special Work Accommodations Enough?

Employers may be happy to provide special accommodations to workers who suffer from transient ischemic attacks, similarly to what they might do for a worker who suffers strokes. While this is thoughtful and undoubtedly useful, it is not addressing the full problem. As transient ischemic attacks are unpredictable, the best of accommodations can only do so much to make the employee comfortable. The real solution is considering how long term disability insurance benefits can help them find stability.
